Hunter Valley

Hunter Valley is a two hour drive north of Sydney and is the oldest wine region in NSW. It has numerous wineries and accommodation options and is popular as weekend getaway for Sydney-siders

The Hunter Valley, just two hours north of Sydney, is Australia’s oldest continuously producing wine region (first vines planted in the 1820s). Despite its warm, humid climate, the region has forged a unique identity around a handful of signature grape varieties, particularly Semillon, and remains one of the country’s best-known wine tourism destinations.

Key grape varieties grown
  • Semillon

    • The Hunter’s flagship grape.

    • Picked early, often at low alcohol, yielding light, lemony, crisp wines in youth.

    • With age (often 5–15 years in bottle), it transforms into a complex, toasty, honeyed, lanolin-driven wine without the use of oak — a style found almost nowhere else.

  • Shiraz

    • Produces medium-bodied, elegant reds rather than the rich, blockbuster Shiraz of Barossa or McLaren Vale.

    • Typically bright red fruit, spice, and earthy notes, with gentle tannins and great drinkability.

    • Some vines date back to the 19th century, giving depth and complexity.

  • Chardonnay

    • Widely planted, often made in a more restrained modern style (balanced oak, stone fruit, citrus).

    • Historically quite rich and oaky, but the trend is now toward finesse and freshness.

  • Verdelho

    • A strong regional variety, offering tropical, spicy, vibrant whites.

    • Often made for easy, early drinking.

  • Other plantings

    • Small parcels of Tempranillo, Fiano, Sangiovese, and other Mediterranean varieties have been planted in recent decades, reflecting climate adaptation.
