Murrumbateman

The Murrumbateman Wine Region enjoys consistent recognition in national wine guides and shows. Grape varieties you’ll see there include;

  • Shiraz — the region’s signature red. Many producers make a classic cool-climate Shiraz (and the famous Shiraz–Viognier style) with bright perfume, peppery spice and elegant tannin.

  • Riesling — high-acidity, very ageworthy examples are common; Riesling is one of the district’s hallmark whites.

  • Viognier — used both as a varietal and traditionally co-fermented with Shiraz for aromatic lift.

  • Chardonnay & Pinot (Pinot Noir/Pinot Gris) — cooler sites and altitude suit these, producing finesseful Chardonnays and lighter Pinot styles.

  • Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot — present in the region and made in a cooler, more refined style than many warmer inland regions.

  • Mediterranean & alternative varieties — increasingly planted (Tempranillo, Sangiovese, and others at boutique sites), reflecting experimentation typical across cool Australian regions.

Major wineries & cellar-door names to know
