Southern Highlands

An easy 1.5 hour trip from Sydney, this cool-climate wine region boosts historic towns of Mittagong, Berrima, Bowral and Moss Vale. It arguably is home to NSW's best Pinot Noir wines. And although it has less wineries than Hunter Valley many of them are award winning.

The Southern Highlands wine region of New South Wales is one of Australia’s newer cool-climate regions, officially recognised in the 1990s. Its location, about 1.5–2 hours southwest of Sydney, makes it both a wine destination and an attractive weekend escape. With elevations ranging from 600–900 metres, the region’s climate is markedly cooler than surrounding zones, with a long growing season and strong diurnal shifts — ideal for producing elegant, aromatic wines.

Key grape varieties grown
  • Pinot Noir

    • The red flagship of the region.

    • Produces delicate, perfumed styles with red cherry, strawberry, and subtle earthy notes.

    • Often used both for still wines and as a base for sparkling.

  • Chardonnay

    • The leading white variety.

    • Grown for both still and sparkling wines, showing citrus, stone fruit, and balanced oak use.

    • Cool nights help retain crisp acidity, giving freshness and finesse.

  • Sauvignon Blanc & Pinot Gris/Grigio

    • Popular aromatic whites that thrive in the cooler climate.

    • Typically made in a crisp, fruit-forward style with herbaceous and tropical notes.

  • Sparkling wines

    • A regional strength, often traditional method blends of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

    • Increasingly recognised for quality within NSW.

  • Other varieties

    • Riesling and Merlot appear in smaller plantings, while experimental vines (such as Arneis or Tempranillo) are trialled by boutique growers.
