Perth Hills

Perth Hills wine region features stunning landscapes and a diverse selection of wines like Shiraz Chardonnay.

Perth Hills is a compact, boutique-loving region just east of Perth with a lot of local character. Below is a focused overview covering the climate context (brief), the grapes that do best there, the cellar-doors and producers worth knowing, typical wine styles, and practical tasting tips.

Grape varieties grown
  • Shiraz — a core red variety in the Hills; tends toward medium-bodied, savoury styles when yields are controlled.

  • Chardonnay — one of the principal whites, ranging from fresh, citrus/stone-fruit styles to modestly textural examples depending on site and oakuse.

  • Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot — planted in a number of pockets and made in a cooler-site style compared with WA’s warmer regions.

  • Viognier and other Rhône/alternative whites — appear across boutique vineyards, adding aromatic diversity.

  • Chenin Blanc and experimental varieties (Tempranillo, etc.) — the region has a history of growers trialling Mediterranean and alternative grapes; Chenin and small trial blocks of Tempranillo/others are seen on a number of sites.

Major wineries & notable cellar-doors

Perth Hills is dominated by family and boutique cellar-doors rather than a few giant estates. A practical way to think of “major” here is: longstanding, visitor-facing or widely recommended producers. Representative names you’ll see recommended in regional guides and local directories include:

  • Jadran Wines — one of the oldest and most visited Perth Hills cellar-doors; known for a broad range including table wines and fortified styles, and open daily for tastings.

  • Myattsfield Vineyards — a family-run estate in the Bickley Valley with a long local profile and a focus on estate wines.

  • Plume Estate Vineyard — boutique Bickley Valley producer with a tapas-style cellar experience and small-batch wines.
