Mudgee

Mudgee is located to the north of Orange and is warmer than its neighbour. It is also older in historic terms having been settled in mid-19th century. The town is home to many mining families and is popular as a destination for its charm and character

Mudgee (Central Ranges, NSW) is a warm-to-moderate inland region with higher-altitude pockets and varied soils. It supports both classic Australian varieties (Shiraz, Cabernet, Chardonnay) and an energetic few decades of experimentation with Mediterranean and Spanish varieties — partly because growers can push for ripe fruit while retaining freshness from cool nights.

Main grape varieties
  • Shiraz & Cabernet Sauvignon — the backbone reds of the region. Shiraz in Mudgee tends to be ripe and fruit-driven but, where yields are controlled and cooler sites used, shows restraint and spice rather than pure jamminess. Cabernet provides structure and is often used in regional blends.

  • Chardonnay — a widely planted and reliable white; styles run from fresh, citrus-driven examples to more textural, oak-influenced bottlings depending on producer approach.

  • Semillon / Verdelho / Sauvignon Blanc — Whites such as Semillon and Verdelho are common, with Verdelho a popular warm-country choice for aromatic, early-drinking wines.

  • Alternative / Mediterranean & Spanish varieties — Mudgee has become notable for trialling and embracing varieties like Tempranillo, Garnacha (Grenache), Graciano, and Zinfandel (Lowe is famous for Zinfandel), plus other grapes planted by small, organic producers. This experimentation is now part of the region’s identity.

Major wineries
  • Robert Stein Wines — one of Mudgee’s founding modern estates (vines planted in the 1970s); the Stein family are long-standing regional ambassadors and make a broad range including Riesling, Shiraz and experimental small lots. A good first stop to taste region-style and history.

  • Lowe Family Wine Co (Lowe Wines) — an organic/biodynamic producer well known for small-batch, terroir-driven wines and for making Zinfandel a local flagship; they’re a good example of Mudgee’s experimental, farm-forward producers.

  • Logan Wines — a much-visited, architecturally striking cellar door with a reputation for quality sparkling and still wines; a popular, reliable visitor experience and one of the region’s more prominent tasting rooms.

  • Vinifera (Vinifera Wines) — a certified organic family vineyard notable for early Spanish variety plantings (Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano) and recent show success with Tempranillo — a sign of how Mudgee’s alternative varieties are gaining recognition.
